WHAT IS A MP3 ?

You may have noticed that on the sample page, there is a mention of a file format called MP3. MP3s or MPEG3s are simply compressed music files, like the kind you find on DVDs and VCDs, but they are of other MPEG formats. By using compression technology, the undetectable frequencies of the sample is removed and this allows quite good compression - usually 1:10 for a CD quality music file. It is quite common to be able to compress a 1 minute CD quality file into 1MB of MP3, whereas a .wav file would be up to 15MB in size. It does not need a good computer to play it on, unlike DVDs, only a mid-range 486 is required (and a soundcard of course).
However, this size advantage has meant that it is quite easily (and illgally) to distribute music across the internet. I think that MP3 has great potential as a "try before you buy" format, and this is why I have included some MP3s in my pages. BUT IT REQUIRES YOU TO MAKE IT WORK, DO NOT TREAT THESE SONGS AS PIRATED SONGS, BUT AS SAMPLES BEFORE YOU PURCHASE.

WHERE CAN I FIND A MP3 PLAYER ?

One of the most popular and stable players is WinAmp. It has all the features you need for a MP3 player plus things like:
** Plug-ins
** 3D visualizations
** Configuration to play on lower-end machines
** Special effects plug-ins
** Ablity to change skins, ie. the GUI
** Ability to play other formats : .wav .mid .mod ......
** Shareware with 14 days evaluation but NO feature will be disabled, it relies on honesty I suppose.
** Small file size, less than 600KB.
